City of Westminster College have been crowned Planet Earth Games Further Education winners for 2025.

The annual competition, held in partnership between Planet Earth Games Trust and Association of Colleges Sport, brings together staff and students nationwide to represent their college by taking part in a series of challenges that support sustainability, active wellbeing and conservation.

Colleges are empowered to create their own youth-led challenges - all themed under a UN Sustainable Development Goal – and they responded by creating 200 challenges including a Sustainable Sports Day, Wellbeing Walks, Open water swimming, Hug a tree, Plogging, the Seven day salad challenge and much more. There were over 10,000 individual actions across the programme with positive feedback from college staff and students alike, including:

“Participating in Planet Earth Games inspired me to cycle to college regularly, reducing my carbon footprint and improving my fitness”

“We have fostered a greater sense of sustainability, physical activity and environmental mindfulness. Seeing students take an active role in the challenges has been incredibly rewarding”

“One of the most exciting additions to this year’s activity calendar was our sustainable sports day, held at the main campus and attended by students from all sites.”

The competition took place from January through to Earth Day (22 April) with staff and students taking part in challenges and scoring points for their college on the live leaderboards at planetearthgames.org

City of Westminster College were the overall winners ahead of Chelmsford College, who were runners up overall and the leading Tier 1 college (the smallest tier of AoC members colleges) and third place went to 2024 champions Bradford College. Petty Pool College were the leading NATSPEC college, the Heart of Yorkshire College group also had three colleges (Castleford, Wakefield and Selby in the top 7). Heart of Worcestershire College were the leading Tier 2 college. Please see the top 20 below.

Chris Broadbent, Founder, Planet Earth Games said:

“This is the fourth year of Planet Earth Games' Further Education competition with AoC Sport and it just gets better every year. We were grateful for the support of the Sport England Movement Fund which helped us resource the programme.

“Behind the impressive numbers there are countless examples of this competition engaging hard-to-reach groups including the participation of students with learning difficulties and imprisoned offenders taking part through Milton Keynes College.

“This has also been the first year we have worked with the Leadership Skills Foundation and that has enabled us to engage colleges and young people in the Environment Leaders Programme bringing together the practical skills and academic understanding to nurture green leaders of the future.

“We are also grateful to the support of SS4FE who kindly sponsored the individual student competition won by Bradford College’s Arum Abdulla who will be awarded a £150 prize for being the highest scoring student.”

“As ever, it was a pleasure working with AoC Sport and every member college on this rewarding and impactful programme in the Further Education space.”
